Ceramic Coating vs Sealant in Calgary

The short answer

A ceramic coating is a hard, semi-permanent layer that needs paint correction first and costs far more. A sealant is a lighter protection layer that lasts weeks to months, goes on during a normal wash, and costs a fraction of the price. Detail Pals offers sealant and wax upgrades, not ceramic coating.

Ceramic coating gets a lot of attention, and for some cars it is the right call. For most Calgary daily drivers that see salt, gravel and an automatic car wash now and then, a regular sealant does most of the job for much less money.

This guide explains the difference honestly. Detail Pals does not sell ceramic coating, so the goal here is to help you decide, not to upsell you.

What a sealant is

A paint sealant is a synthetic protection layer applied after the car is washed. It makes water bead and sheet off, keeps road film from sticking as easily, and adds gloss.

Spray sealants go on in minutes as part of a wash. They are not permanent: expect weeks to a few months depending on the product, how often the car is washed and how harsh the season is.

Every Detail Pals Exterior Wash & Protect finishes with a spray wax or sealant, and the Exterior Premium Detail uses an extended sealant after clay decontamination.

What a ceramic coating is

A ceramic coating is a liquid that cures into a hard, thin layer bonded to the clear coat. It is more chemical-resistant than a sealant and can last years rather than months.

Because it locks in whatever is underneath, the paint usually needs decontamination and machine polishing first. That prep is most of the cost and time, and it is best done indoors where the coating can cure without dust, rain or cold.

A coating does not make a car scratch-proof or stone-chip proof, and it still needs regular, careful washing.

Cost and lifespan side by side

Sealant: included in our exterior packages, or a $39 wax/sealant upgrade. Lasts weeks to months. Easy to reapply each season.

Ceramic coating: usually priced in the hundreds to thousands of dollars at a shop once polishing is included. Lasts years with proper care.

Paint polish before protection: our one-step paint enhancement is $249 and improves gloss and light swirls; it is not multi-stage correction.

Which one fits a Calgary car

Choose sealant if the car is a daily driver, sees winter salt, goes through the odd automatic wash, or you want protection now without a big spend. Reapply it in fall before salt season and again in spring.

Consider a ceramic coating from a shop if the paint is new or recently corrected, the car is garaged, and you plan to keep it for years and hand wash it.

Either way, clean paint matters most. Washing salt off regularly through the winter does more for the paint than any product left to sit under a layer of brine.

FAQ

Does Detail Pals offer ceramic coating?

No. We offer spray sealant in every exterior package, a $39 wax/sealant upgrade, an extended sealant in the Exterior Premium Detail (from $179), and a $249 one-step paint enhancement.

Is a sealant enough for Calgary winters?

For most daily drivers, yes, if it is applied before salt season and the car is washed regularly. It slows how much salt and road film stick, which makes each wash easier.

Can I put a sealant on top of a ceramic coating?

You can use a compatible topper, but it is usually unnecessary. Keep the coating clean and follow the installer's care instructions.
