You can feel bonded contaminants: run your fingertip over just-washed paint. If it feels rough, gritty, or like fine sandpaper, that's contamination. Clay bar removes it.
It's an add-on before any paint polishing or ceramic-style protection because clean paint takes protection better.
What clay bar actually does
A soft polymer bar is glided across lubricated paint. It gently grabs onto bonded contaminants and lifts them off the surface without damaging the clear coat.
Common contaminants it removes: road tar, brake dust, iron rail dust, tree sap residue, industrial fallout, and paint overspray.
When to clay bar
Before waxing or sealing — clean paint accepts protection better and lasts longer.
Before machine polishing — polishing over contaminants embeds them into the paint.
Every 6-12 months as maintenance, more often for vehicles parked outside or near industrial areas.
After extreme conditions: wildfire ash, construction zones, long highway trips.
Detail Pals clay bar service

FAQ
Will clay bar remove scratches?
No. Clay lifts contaminants sitting on top of the clear coat. Scratches are damage in the clear coat itself — that's what polishing addresses.
Can I clay bar at home?
Yes with practice, but improper technique can micro-scratch the finish. If you're doing it first time, watch tutorials and use plenty of lubricant. Or book Detail Pals.
